Teaching Zack to Think

This article talked about a student who was gathering information from the internet on the Holocaust. He found an article from a well known university that contained information that was untrue. The student believed this information and did not check this information with another source.

I agree that students believe everything that is online. The author provided three categories to use to determine the validity of a website. I think that before we tell students to research topics, we should teach them how to research.

WEBQUEST

Talia and I collaborated on this assignment. The webquest is about a family going on vacation. The students will be placed in teams. Each team will decide on a vacation city for the family and what attractions they will visit. They are responsible for calculating the total cost of the trip. Our webquest is aligned with 3rd grade Alabama Course of Study Standards. The students will also create a brochure. This project will improve and increase the students' social skills.

Alabama Kindergarten Conference

This weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the Alabama Kindergarten Conference in Huntsville, AL. This conference was awesome. I had the opportunity to listen to several wonderful speakers, such as Peggy Campbell-Rush, Susan Stevens Crummel, and Janet Stevens. These women were very inspirational. Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel, sibling illustrators/authors, read and demonstrated how to read several of their books. They showed us how they came up with the idea for the story Plaidypus Lost. Janet Stevens informed us that we should not delay doing something that we are passionate about.

Peggy Campbell-Rush is currently a kindergarten teacher and an author. She provided several strategies for teaching kindergarten and reading. She also demonstrated several games to play with the students. I enjoyed her presentation so much that I bought her book.

I can't wait until school starts so that I can tell my students about meeting these wonderful authors.

My Wiki

I really enjoyed working on my wiki. I completed my wiki as well as created one for a friend. My wiki was designed to help parents as well as provide educational assistance to the students.

While designing this wiki, I learned how to utilized SCRIBD. I used Scribd to add my school system's calendar for the 2010-2011 academic school year. I also used Picnik to add features to my picture that I posted on my Glogster page. Glogster is a very cool website. I learned that I could utilizew other's Glogster pages. I also learned how to add videos from Youtube and Teachertube to my Glogster pages.

Here are the links to my completed wikis: http://rburton.wikispaces.com/ and http://msgraham256.wikispaces.com/ I hope you enjoy viewing them.

Skype and Wiki

Today, I skyped with Beverly and Jessica. We viewed each other's wikis and discussed how to add features to wikis. Beverly and I said that we are going to use our wiki's doing the 2010-2011 school year.

I enjoy skyping with web cams versus using IMs. It makes the conversation more personal. I am glad that I have classmates who do not mind sharing ideas and providing assistance whenever I need it.

Skype and Wiki

Last week, Talia and conversed via Skype. We viewed and discussed our wikis. Talia also showed me pictures of her new home.

Final Project

I decided to submit a wiki for my final project. Dustin, my classmate, provided me with several helpful tips. On Sunday, Talia and I conversed by Skype and telephone. She aided me with some issues that I was having with embedding my Glogster file. I have been working on this wiki for the 2 years. I never completed it because my school system only requires the schools to have a web page. Although I have a lot of work to do on my wiki, I am proud of what I have accomplished so far.

Post your favorite frog color. Afterwards, we will create a tally chart of the votes. Then, each student will draw a bar graph to represent to total number of votes for each frog color. Hop to it!

The ABCs of Web Site Evaluation

This article, by Kathy Schrock, provides 26 criteria for students and teachers to use to determine accuracy when gathering information from websites. This reminds me of a time when I was assisting a child with research. We reviewed information from various sites, including Wikipedia. Sometimes the information was aligned with the other sites, sometimes it was not. Also students should have some knowledge of the topic that they are researching. This will aid them in comparing the newly gathered information to what they already know about the topic.

Teaching Tips

EdHelper.com contains various types of graphic organizers. I have utilized this site with my classes. My students enjoy using these graphic organizers. These organizers teach students how to look for and record important information in a story. They also teach students how to organize information, analyze characters, identify the main idea, and sequence events.

WEBQUEST

Talia and I have been working hard on our WebQuest. This assignment involved a lot of planning. We communicated daily. Our WebQuest involves math as well as research. The students have to cooperate with each other in order for their project to be successful.

Togetherville

The more I visit this site, the more I like it. I shared this site with several of my co-workers. They were pleased to know that there is a social network site for children. They liked the idea that they would be the administers on the site. Many of the students at my school have an illegal Facebook and MySpace account. When children are on a site like this, they are exposed to ideas that are not age appropriate. What I like about togetherville.com is that parents can filter everything. The children have to chose comments to put on others pages. This site will help children be responsible on social networks.

YouTube Comes to the Classroom

After reading this article, I realized that youtube is not just for entertaining. Teachers can build background knowledge using some of the various videos that are on the website. The author also gave tips about how to convert youtube videos into another format for use if it is banned in your school district. I shared this idea with several teachers and they were in awe. They did not know that you could convert the videos for classroom use. Since students enjoy looking at youtube on a daily basis, maybe teachers can assign videos for them to watch and discuss when the class meets again. Youtube is not going away so we might as use it for our benefits in the classroom.

Web Application/Webware Presentation

Talia and I are working hard on our presentation. We decided to evaluate the website http://togetherville.com/. This site is connected to Facebook. Talia and I wanted to know if this website is truly safe for children. We decided to join this site to conduct our research.

Wordle

There are numerous activities that you can do with Wordle. I would use this as an icebreaker activity on the first day of school. I would allow the students to interview each other and create a wordle based on the interview.
